Alcohol Poisoning
Alcohol Poisoning
Large amounts of alcohol taken in a short space of time can lead to alcohol poisoning. This means that the major organs in the body can be prevented from working properly, for example heart, lungs and liver.

Alcohol poisoning can kill you by:

  • Stopping your breathing
  • Stopping your heart beat
  • Choking to death on your own vomit

Some signs of alcohol poisoning:

  • Not responding to being spoken to or to touch
  • Having a slow or abnormal pulse rate
  • Having fits brought on by alcohol
  • Having cold, sweaty skin and/or changes to skin tone
  • Having wet themselves
  • Having vomited
  • Slow and shallow breathing
  • Someone cannot be wakened

Prevent Alcohol Poisoning:

  • If you are under 18 - do not drink!
  • Your body is still growing and developing so cannot handle the alcohol in the same way as an adult
  • Adults should stick to the safe maximum daily limits (See Units Section)
  • There are no safe drinking limits for Under 18s

If you are over 18:

  • Do not drink too much
  • Drink lower strength drinks
  • Do not drink too fast
  • Sip your drinks
  • Drink soft drinks between alcoholic ones
  • Eat before you drink alcohol
  • Pour your own drinks (If not in pubs or clubs)
  • Never leave your drink unattended
